The City of Vancouver has launched re:THINK Housing — a global ideas competition for affordable housing in Vancouver

May 3, 2012 – The City of Vancouver is launching re:THINK Housing, a global ideas competition to create affordable housing solutions for Vancouver.

Affordable housing consistently ranks as a top concern amongst Vancouver residents, and re:THINK Housing seeks to generate big, bold and innovative ideas for new affordable housing.

“Affordable housing is one of the toughest challenges we face in Vancouver, and we need fresh, bold thinking in terms of how we build affordable options for the people who live and work in our city,” said Mayor Gregor Robertson. “This competition is an important step to getting dynamic, maybe even controversial ideas into the public realm and hearing directly from our citizens.”

Building on the success of the re:CONNECT ideas competition, in which the City fielded concepts for the Viaducts and False Creek Flats, re:THINK Housing will solicit ideas for site-specific locations in Vancouver, as well as smaller, replicable solutions for neighbourhoods throughout the city.

Applicants may submit proposals for public or private land in two categories: Building Bold, and Vibrant Neighbourhoods. Each proposal must explain how affordability will be maintained over the long term without government subsidy. It should also include ideas on how a project would protect and enhance green space; integrate with neighbourhoods; and be financially viable.

As part of the new community planning processes and in support of re:THINK Housing, storytelling nights based on the theme “There’s No Place Like Home” are being held in three Vancouver neighbourhoods. The events, which are free and open to all Vancouverites, aim to inspire, entertain and motivate thinking about housing and community. The first one was held Tuesday night in Marpole, and two more are upcoming:

Earth Day 2012 is happening this Sunday April 22nd, and if your real estate is in East Vancouver, why not make your way over to Commercial Drive for the parade?

Now in its second year, the Commercial Drive Earth Day Parade is a free festival for the whole community to get together and celebrate the planet we all call home.

Organized by Youth for Climate Justice Now, the parade + festival is designed to bring together elementary and secondary students and adult allies. Last year’s event brought 2,000 Vancouverites together to work to stop climate change.

The Commercial Drive Earth Day Parade promises to be “the most fun you ever had saving the planet.”

The Commercial Drive Earth Day Parade will kick off at 11am at Grandview Highway (12 Ave) & Commercial Drive Skytrain (Broadway Station on the 12th Ave side) and continue up Commercial Drive to Grandview Park.

Condition Your Soil

Many garden favorites, including lilac, mock orange, slender deutzia and daphne, prefer alkaline soil to best soak up the its nutrients. But most of the Pacific Northwest tends to have more acidic soil, so these garden plants need a little help to perform well. Sprinkle garden lime in a circle around the base of each lime-loving plant (follow the package directions as to how much) to make sure the pH in your garden stays alkaline enough for these beauties.

Plant Cool-Season Vegetables

April is the perfect time to set out starts of cold-tolerant vegetables. While it’s not yet time to set out starts of heat-loving plants like tomatoes, squash, corn or peppers, by planting less-sensitive veggies now you can get a great jump on the season.

Plant Flowers

Annual flowers to plant in April include snapdragons, sweet William or annual dianthus, nasturtium, calendula (shown), marigold, pansy, dusty miller and sweet alyssum.
